Filing a Water Damage Claim Step by Step
Filing an insurance claim properly is mechanical, but the mechanics matter. Skipped steps or sloppy documentation cost you 10 to 30 percent of the payout most policyholders don't realize they could have collected.
Step 1: Document before anything else
Before you call anyone, photograph and video the damage. Multiple angles, every room, contents in original positions. This documentation is your evidence package. You'll never have a better chance to capture it than right now.
Step 2: Make the home safe
Stop further damage (shut off water main, cover damaged roof with tarp, etc.). California policies include a 'duty to mitigate' clause โ you're required to take reasonable steps to limit damage. Photograph these protective steps too.
Step 3: Call your insurance company
Most policies require notification 'as soon as reasonably possible.' Call the claims line. They open a claim number โ write it down. They'll typically assign an adjuster within a few business days. Confirm the next steps in writing if possible.
Step 4: Bring in restoration / mitigation
For water damage, get a restoration company on-site within 24 to 48 hours. Their professional documentation supplements your phone photos and is what the adjuster references. Most carriers prefer direct billing arrangements with restoration companies.
Step 5: Work with the adjuster
The adjuster inspects, takes their own photos, and writes a scope. Compare their scope to your documentation. If something's missing or undervalued, raise it in writing. Polite, specific, in writing. The adjuster's first scope is rarely the final scope when disputes are pursued reasonably.
